Meeting No. 35

Wednesday, May 7, 2003

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:38 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Bernard Patry, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Murray Calder, Aileen Carroll, Bill Casey, Irwin Cotler, Hon. Art Eggleton, John Harvard,  Francine Lalonde, Hon. Diane Marleau, Alexa McDonough, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Karen Redman.

Associate Member present:  Karen Kraft Sloan

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: James Lee and Marcus Pistor, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the National Council on Canada Arab Relations: Mazen Chouaib, Executive Director. From McGill University: A. Üner Turgay, Director, Institute of Islamic Studies. From the Aga Khan Foundation Canada: Nazeer Aziz Ladhani, Chief Executive Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of Relations with Muslim Countries (See Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, February 6, 2003, Meeting No. 16).

The witnesses made statements.

At 3:55 p.m., the Vice-Chair, Hon. Diane Marleau took the Chair.

At 4:00 p.m., Bernard Patry took the Chair.

At 5:32 p.m. the Committee proceeded to discuss its future business.

By unanimous consent it was agreed, - That the Committee would meet over working meals with delegations from the Turkish, Iranian and Russian Parliaments prior to the June adjournment.

At 5:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
