The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 8:15 a.m. this day, in Edmonton at the Coast Terrace Inn Edmonton South in Ballroom C, the Acting Chair, David Price, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present:  David Price, Lynne Yelich.

 

Acting Member present:  Andrew Telegdi for Joe Fontana.

 

In attendance:  From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament:  Benjamin Dolin, Researcher.

 

WITNESSES:  From the Afghan Association of Alberta:  Hakim Faqiryar, President; Sarwar Nazami, Secretary.  From the Ethno-Cultural Council of Calgary:  Muhammad Rasheed, Board Member; Vinay Dey, Treasurer; Umesh Vyas, Counsellor.  From the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League of Canada:  Eugene Harasymiw, Chair, Standing Committee on Civil Liberties.  From the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Alberta Provincial Council:  Catherine Chichak, President; Dr. Bohdan Klid, Vice-President.  As individual:  Dr. William W. Zuzak.

David Price took the chair, pursuant to a motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, November 5, 2002.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Friday, November 8, 2002, the Committee resumed debate on Clause 2, consideration of Bill C-18, An Act respecting Canadian citizenship (see Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, November 21, 2002, Meeting No. 6).

Hakim Faqiryar made a statement and answered questions.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on a National Identity Card (see Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, February 6, 2003, Meeting No. 17).
