The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:07 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Claude Duplain, Howard Hilstrom, Dick Proctor, Bob Speller, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.
Acting Member present: Bernard Bigras for Marcel Gagnon.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Analysts.
Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food: Tom Richardson, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy Branch; Simon Kennedy, Director General, Policy Planning and Integration, Strategic Policy Branch; John Culley, Program Director, Research Planning and Coordination. From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Phil Macdonald, National Manager, Environment Release Assessments, Plan Biosafety Office. From the Monsanto Canada Inc.: Curtis Rempel, Roundup Ready Wheat Lead; Kerry J. Preete, Vice-President; John Dossetor, Vice-President, Government Affairs. From the Canadian Federation of Agriculture: Weldon Newton, President, Keystone Agricultural Producers; Jennifer Higginson, Trade Policy Analyst.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of the approval of genetically modified wheat and its effect on Canadian agriculture.
Simon Kennedy and Phil Macdonald made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.
Kerry Preete and Weldon Newton made opening statements and, with Jennifer Higginson and Curtis Rempel, answered questions.
At 1:12 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
