Meeting No. 17

Wednesday, May 9, 2001

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Rick Borotsik, Garry Breitkreuz, Murray Calder, Claude Duplain, Marcel Gagnon, Howard Hilstrom, Charles Hubbard, Larry McCormick, Dick Proctor, Bob Speller, Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the "Coopérative fédérée de Québec": Paul Noiseux, Treasurer; Jean-François Harel, Assistant Secretary General.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Tuesday, May 1st, 2001, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-25, An Act to amend the Farm Credit Corporation Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, May 3, 2001, Meeting No. 15).

Mr. Paul Noiseux and Mr. Jean-François Harel made a presentation and answered questions.

At 4:48 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:52 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

It was agreed – That, further to the letters received from the Saskatchewan and Manitoba ministers of Agriculture and Food regarding the agricultural crisis (low commodity prices and the repercussions on family farms and the rural economy, low food prices and ever-higher input costs) inviting the Committee to travel to their respective provinces to hear from farmers, the two ministers and the two official spokespersons be invited to appear, before the summer break, before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food; and that the Committee hold hearings in the fall in the western provinces to hear from stakeholders affected by the agricultural crisis

At 5:11 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
