Tuesday, June 6, 2000
The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 10:11 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Andy Scott, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Carolyn Bennett, Chuck Cadman, Aileen Carroll, Peter MacKay, John Maloney, Peter Mancini, Jacques Saada and Andy Scott.
Acting Member present: Monique Guay for Michel Bellehumeur.
Other Members present: Alexa McDonough, Pat Martin and Michelle Dockrill.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst.
Witness: From the House of Commons: Peter MacKay, MP for Pictou--Antigonish--Guysborough.
Pursuant to its Order of Reference of March 21, 2000, consideration of Recommendation 73 of the Province of Nova Scotia's Public Inquiry into the Westray disaster.
Peter MacKay made an opening statement and answered questions.
Peter Mancini moved, - That the Committee recommend that the Minister of Justice and the Department of Justice bring forward proposed legislation in accordance with Motion 79, agreed to by the House on March 21, 2000 and the principles underlying Bill C-259 for consideration by the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.
By unanimous consent, the 24 hour notice of motion requirement was waived.
After debate, the motion was agreed to by unanimous consent.
It was agreed, - That the Chair table the motion in the House as the 5th Report of the Committee.
It was agreed, - That, in accordance with the Standing Order 109, the Committee requests the Government to table a comprehensive response to the report.
By unanimous consent, - It was agreed, - That Lawrence McBrearty, David Doorey, Vernon Theriault, Howard Sim and Dennis Deveau from the United Steelworker's of America be invited to testify before the Committee.
The witness made an opening statement and answered questions.
At 12:41 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
