The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Pierre Brien, Gerry Byrne, John Cannis, Antoine Dubé, Walt Lastewka, Gurbax Malhi, Dan McTeague, Ian Murray, Charlie Penson, Jerry Pickard, Nelson Riis and Susan Whelan.

Acting Member present: Odina Desrochers for Pierre Brien.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Dan Shaw, Research Officer.

Appearing: The Hon. Gilbert Normand, Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development) and the Hon. George S. Baker, Secretary of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency).

Witnesses: From the Department of Industry: Paul Dufour, Departmental Assistant, Science, Research and Development. From the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada: Dr. Thomas A. Brzustowski, President. From the Canadian Institutes of Health Research: Dr. Marc Renaud, Member and President, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. From the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency: Michael Horgan, President; Paul LeBlanc, Vice President, Policy and Program; Steve Merrill, Acting Vice-President, Finance and Corporate Affairs; Craig Rowsell, Director General, Advocacy and Industrial Benefits.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of the House dated February 29, 2000, Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2001, Votes under INDUSTRY and the Performance Report - Industry Canada for the period ending March 31, 1999.

The Hon. Gilbert Normand made a statement and with the witnesses answered questions.

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:32 p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 5:18 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
