The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 9:00 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Charles L. Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Charles L. Caccia, John Herron, Gar Knutson, David Pratt, David Price, Karen Redman, Julian Reed.

Acting Member present: Susan Whelan for Marlene Catterall.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas and Christine Labelle, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Species at Risk Working Group: Elizabeth May, Executive Director, Sierra Club of Canada; Gordon Peeling, President and Chief Executive Officer, Mining Association of Canada; Robert Décarie, Biodiversity Advisor, Canadian Pulp and Paper Association; Sandy Baumgartner, Manager of Programs and Communications, Canadian Wildlife Federation; Tony Rotherham, Director, Woodlands, Canadian Pulp and Paper Association; Marc Johnson, Manager of Conservation Programs, Canadian Nature Federation; Pierre Gratton, Vice-President, Public Affairs and Communications, Mining Association of Canada; Gary Nielsen, Stewardship Coordinator, Leeds County, Ontario; David Lindsay, Fish and Wildlife Biologist, Timberwest Forest Limited.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its consideration of issues pertaining to the protection of wildlife species at risk in Canada with respect to Bill C-33, an Act respecting the protection of wildlife species at risk in Canada.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

Ordered - That the Brief of the Species at Risk Working Group tabled this day be appended to the Evidence of this day's meeting.

At 11:43 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
