Wednesday, February 9, 2000
The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Joe Fontana, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Rob Anders, Jean Augustine, Leon Benoit, Bernard Bigras, Joe Fontana, Sophia Leung, Rick Limoges, Steve Mahoney, Pat Martin, David Price and Andrew Telegdi.
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Canadian Council for Refugees: Sharryn Aiken, Past President; Mitchell Goldberg, Chair, Working Group on Refugee Protection; Janet Dench, Executive Director. From the Air Transport Association of Canada: Warren Everson, Vice-President and Strategic Planning; George Petsikas, Director, Government and Industry Affairs and Legal Counsel, Air Transat; Bridget Siwik, Manager, Facilitation, Air Canada. From The Shipping Federation of Canada: Gilles Bélanger, President; Sonia Simard, Manager, Policy and Government Affairs.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on all aspects of the Refugee Determination System and Illegal Migrants. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Wednesday, November 3, 1999, Meeting No. 2)
Sharryn Aiken and Mitchell Goldberg from the Canadian Council for Refugees made statements and, with Janet Dench, answered questions.
At 4:18 p.m., the sitting was suspended.
At 4:48 p.m., the sitting resumed.
Questioning continued.
Warren Everson from the Air Transport Association made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.
Gilles Bélanger from The Shipping Federation of Canada made a statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.
At 6:22 p.m., the Committee adjourned until 9:00 a.m. Thursday, February 10, 2000.
