House of Commons Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development hearings on Bill C-9, An Act to give effect to the Nisga’a Final Agreement


Ottawa, November 12, 1999 -- The Standing Committee began its study of Bill C-9 in Ottawa on Wednesday, November 4,1999, when the Honourable Robert Nault, Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, appeared with his officials.

On Thursday, November 5, 1999, Nisga’a Chief Joe Gosnell and his officials appeared before the Committee.

From Monday, November 15 to Friday, November 1999, the Committee will hold hearings in British Columbia in the following locations:

Monday -- TERRACE, BC
Best Western Terrace Inn
(Room Skeena 1& 2)
9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
2:00p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday -- SMITHERS, BC
Friendship Centre Society Community Hall
9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Wednesday -- PRINCE GEORGE, BC
Coast Inn of the North
(Tabor Room)
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Thursday -- VICTORIA, BC
The Empress Hotel
(Chrystal Room)
9:15 a.m. to 12:00 noon
1:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Friday -- VANCOUVER, BC
Crowne Plaza Hotel Georgia
(Regal Ballroom)
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.


The starting time of the meetings could be subject to minor changes.

Members of the public may attend the meetings in order to observe the proceedings and to hear the testimony of scheduled witnesses.

Further hearings will be held in Ottawa during the week of November 22, 1999 for the remaining scheduled witnesses.

Names of the witnesses will be published on the Committee’s Notices of Meetings, which will be posted on the Parliamentary Internet site at www.parl.gc.ca as soon as final confirmations are received.

The Committee welcomes written briefs from interested parties. Anyone wishing to send a brief is urged to do so as soon as possible.
