TUESDAY, MARCH 24, 1998
The Sub-Committee on Human Rights and International Development of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:44 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 208, West Block, the Chair, Colleen Beaumier, presiding.
Members of the Sub-Committee present: Jean Augustine, Raymonde Folco, Keith Martin, Bob Mills, Svend Robinson, Diane St-Jacques.
Acting Members present: Murray Calder for Claudette Bradshaw; Bill Graham for Raymonde Folco; Benoit Sauvageau for Maud Debien.
Other Members present: André Bachand, Bob Speller and Daniel Turp.
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From PEN Canada: Isobel Harry, Policy Director; Charlotte Gray, Chair, Writers in Prison Committee; Marco Vinicio Gallardo, Son of Brigadier General José Francisco Gallardo Rodriguez. From B’nai Brith Canada: Lisa Armony, National Director, Institute of International Affairs; Rubin Friedman, Director, Government Relations; Stephen Scheinberg, Vice-President.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Sub-Committee proceeded to consider the human rights issues brought forward by PEN Canada and B’nai Brith Canada.
Charlotte Gray, Isobel Harry and Marco Vinicio Gallardo each made a statement and answered questions.
At 4:38 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.
At 4:47 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed.
Rubin Friedman, Stephen Scheinberg and Lisa Armony each made a statement and answered questions.
At 5:28 o’clock p.m., the Sub-Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
