Meeting No. 88

Tuesday, February 9, 1999

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met jointly with the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chairs, Pat O'Brien and Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Jim Hart, René Laurin, Pat O'Brien, John O'Reilly, David Pratt, David Price and John Richardson.

Associate Members present: Monique Guay and Janko Peric.

Members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade present: Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, John Cannis, Maud Debien, The Honourable Sheila Finestone, Bill Graham, Bob Mills, Julian Reed, Svend Robinson, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

Acting Member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade present: Monique Guay for Benoît Sauvageau.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner, Corinne McDonald, Lee James and Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Lt-Gen Raymond R. Henault, Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (DCDS). From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Paul Heinbecker, Assistant Deputy Minister, Global and Security Policy; Jim Wright, Director General for Central East and South Europe.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committees proceeded to a briefing session on the situation in Kosovo.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 5:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
