MEETING No. 43

Thursday, MARCH 19, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met in camera at 11:20 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Vice-Chair, John Maloney, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eleni Bakopanos, Paul DeVillers, Nick Discepola, Sheila Finestone, Paul E. Forseth, Derek Lee, Peter G. MacKay, John Maloney, Richard Marceau, John McKay and Jack Ramsay.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst, Marilyn Pilon, Research Officer. From the Committees and Legislative Services Directorate : Monique Hamilton and Suzanne Verville, Legislative Clerks

Witnesses: From the Department of Justice: Michael Zigayer, Senior Counsel, Criminal Law Policy Section; Michael Pierce, Legal Counsel, Human Rights Section. From the Department of the Solicitor General: Paul Dubrule, Director, Legal Services; Yvette Aloisi, Director General, Police Sector; Marian Harymann, Senior Policy Analyst. Pursuant to its order of reference dated February 11, 1998, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill S-5, An Act to amend the Canada Evidence Act and the Criminal Code in respect of persons with disabilities, to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act in respect of persons with disabilities and other matters and to make consequential amendments to other Acts (See Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, March 12, 1998, meeting No. 39).

The witnesses answered questions.

At 1:44 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
