Potential Canada–Mercosur Free Trade Agreement

Report and Government Response

Report 14: Canada and the Mercosur Countries: A Potential Agreement to Advance Trade Relations
  • Adopted by the Committee: December 6, 2018
  • Presented to the House: December 12, 2018

On Tuesday, March 20, 2018, the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade passed a motion regarding a study of Canada’s priorities for the negotiation of a potential free trade agreement (FTA) between Canada and Mercosur, an economic bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Negotiations began in Ottawa on that day.

As part of its study, the Committee will hold meetings to hear the views of Canadians, including representatives of businesses, organized labour and other interested groups, regarding the potential Canada–Mercosur FTA. The Committee is interested in Canadians’ perspectives on the advantages and disadvantages of negotiating and implementing such an FTA, negotiating priorities that should be pursued, and any other matters that parliamentarians should consider during this study.
