2024 Centennial Flame Research Award - Heather Walkus - Recipient

Ottawa, June 17, 2024 -

On Monday, June 10, 2024, the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (the Committee) chose Heather Walkus as the recipient of the 2024 edition of the Centennial Flame Research Award. The committee would like to thank everyone who applied.

Heather Walkus’ work will examine the efforts of leaders who have advanced inclusion of persons with disabilities and how people with disabilities have contributed to the progression of human rights. It will identify effective change strategies and share these findings across various disability communities.

The Centennial Flame Research Award is granted each year by the Committee to a Canadian with a disability to enable them to conduct research and prepare a report on the contributions of one or more persons with disabilities to the public life of Canada or the activities of Parliament, in accordance with the Centennial Flame Research Award Act.

For the year 2024, the award amounts to $7,500. Funding for this award is collected from the Centennial Flame monument on Parliament Hill and from any monetary donations made to the Centennial Flame Research Award Fund.
