The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage presents its report entitled “The holding of a national forum on the media”
Ottawa, November 27, 2024 -
The Hon. Hedy Fry, Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage, today presented the committee’s fifteenth report, The holding of a national forum on the media. The report is the result of a three-meeting study held in February 2024. “Witnesses from a variety of backgrounds highlighted what they thought a national forum should address in order to ensure an open, constructive dialogue on the challenges and opportunities facing Canadian media,” said Dr. Fry. “Such a forum could yield important insights into how to strengthen the overall health and sustainability of both legacy media organizations and newer, ‘digital-first’ creators across Canada.”
A total of 17 witnesses from academia, civil society and the media sector shared their perspectives on the challenges facing the traditional news sector, including the decline in advertising revenues and the loss of trust in news. They also discussed the potential terms of reference for a national, industry-led forum on the media and how it could be a way to exchange ideas and solutions to these challenges.Witness testimony and a link to the report can be found on the Parliament of Canada website at CHPC - National Forum on the Media.
