The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Joyce Bateman, Tyrone Benskin, Corneliu Chisu, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Hon. Stéphane Dion, Pierre Dionne Labelle, Yvon Godin, Jacques Gourde, Guy Lauzon, Élaine Michaud, Bernard Trottier and David Wilks.

In attendance: House of Commons: Suzie Cadieux, Procedural Clerk . Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

Appearing: Hon. James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Daniel Jean, Deputy Minister; Hubert Lussier, Assistant Deputy Minister, Citizenship and Heritage.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f), and the motion adopted on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, the Committee commenced consideration of the study of the Canadian Heritage Official Languages Annual Report 2010-11.

Yvon Godin gave notice of the following motions:

That the Committee invite the Chairman of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), Jean-Pierre Blais, for a two-hour public and televised meeting before March 30, 2013, regarding the CRTC’s obligations under the Official Languages Act.

That the Committee invite the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Hon. Jason Kenney, for a two-hour public and televised meeting before March 30, 2013, regarding his department’s obligations under the Official Languages Act.

Hon. James Moore made a statement and, with Hubert Lussier and Daniel Jean, answered questions.

At 4:29 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:34 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
