The Standing Committee on Health met at 8:46 a.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Parm Gill, Wladyslaw Lizon, Dany Morin, Anne Minh-Thu Quach, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith and Mark Strahl.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Harold Albrecht, M.P., Kitchener—Conestoga. Mental Health Commission of Canada: David Goldbloom, Vice-Chair, Board of Directors; Mary Bartram, Director, Mental Health Strategy. Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council: Tana Nash, Coordinator. Department of Health: Kathy Langlois, Director General, Community Programs Directorate, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch. Public Health Agency of Canada: Marla Israel, Acting Director General, Centre for Health Promotion. Correctional Service of Canada: Jennifer Wheatley, Director General, Mental Health. Department of National Defence: Col Rakesh Jetly, Mental Health Advisor, Directorate of Mental Health; LCol Suzanne Bailey, National Practice Leader, Social Work and Mental Health Training. Department of Veterans Affairs: Janice Burke, Senior Director, Strategic Policy Integration.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, February 15, 2012, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-300, An Act respecting a Federal Framework for Suicide Prevention.
 

Harold Albrecht, David Goldbloom and Tana Nash made statements and, with Mary Bartram, answered questions.

 

At 9:48 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:50 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Marla Israel, Janice Burke by videoconference from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Jennifer Wheatley and Col Rakesh Jetly made statements and, with the Kathy Langlois and LCol Suzanne Bailey, answered questions.

 

At 10:43 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:45 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That in relation to the study of Bill C-300, An Act respecting a Federal Framework for Suicide Prevention, the proposed budget in the amount of $25,650 be adopted.

 

At 10:48 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
