The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in a televised session at 1:05 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Irwin Cotler, Johanne Deschamps, Russ Hiebert, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid and David Sweet.

 

Acting Members present: Justin Trudeau for Mario Silva.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Pearson Peacekeeping Centre: Peter Miller, Vice-President, Programs; Sophie Toupin, Project Officer. Entraide Missionnaire: Denis Tougas.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee on Thursday, October 21, 2010, the Subcommittee resumed its study of sexual assault on women and children during peacekeeping operations, in fragile states and/or in situations of conflict.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee proceed to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.

On motion of David Sweet, it was agreed, — That the Subcommittee proceed to sit in camera.

 

At 2:07 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 2:07 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee express its urgent concern regarding the death sentence imposed in Iran on Saeed Malekpour, a Canadian permanent resident, who is married to a Canadian citizen; and

a) urge the Iranian authorities to stay the execution; and

b) urge the Canadian Government to make urgent representations to the Iranian Government to stay the execution.

 

At 2:17 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
