The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 11:02 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Patricia Davidson, Ruby Dhalla, Nicolas Dufour, Kirsty Duncan, Cathy McLeod, Joy Smith and Tim Uppal.

 

Acting Members present: Nicole Demers for Luc Malo, Todd Norman Russell for Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh and Glenn Thibeault for Megan Anissa Leslie.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health.

 

Witnesses: Department of Health: Paul Glover, Assistant Deputy Minister, Healthy Environments and Consumer Safety Branch; Athana Mentzelopoulos, Director General, Consumer Product Safety Directorate. Option consommateurs: Anu Bose, Head, Ottawa Office; Michel Arnold, Executive Director. Safe Kids Canada: Pamela Fuselli, Executive Director. Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs: Robert Simonds, President. Standards Council of Canada: John Walter, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Thursday, October 7, 2010, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-36, An Act respecting the safety of consumer products.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with Athana Mentzelopoulos and Paul Glover, answered questions.

 

At 11:59 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:06 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Robert Simonds, Michel Arnold, Pamela Fuselli and John Walter made statements and, with Anu Bose, answered questions.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the Committee proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-36, An Act respecting the safety of consumer products, on Tuesday, October 26, 2010.

 

At 12:47 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
