The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 8-53, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Scott Armstrong, Patrick Brown, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Bonnie Crombie, Dean Del Mastro, Royal Galipeau, Carole Lavallée, Roger Pomerleau, Blake Richards and Pablo Rodriguez.

 

Acting Members present: Raymonde Folco for Scott Simms.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Association canadienne française de l'Ontario - Région Témiskaming: Jean-Claude Carrière, Community Project Officer. Friends of Canadian Broadcasting: Ian Morrison, Spokesperson.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, December 9, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of the mandate and funding of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
 

Jean-Claude Carrière made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:09 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:15 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Ian Morrison made a statement and answered questions.

 

Carole Lavallée moved, — It is proposed that it be recommended that the federal government provide CBC with stable funding until 2015-2016 to carry out its five-year plan, as presented to the Standing Committee on Heritage, and definitively include additional annual funding of $60 million and that the adoption of this motion be reported to the House at the earliest opportunity.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 0.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Charlie Angus moved, — That the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage examine the role of Sports Canada and amateur sports associations in addressing the rising incidence rates of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries in amateur and youth athletics.

 

Debate arose.

 

On motion of Carole Lavallée, it was agreed, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “athletics” the following: “and that it report its findings to the House”.

 

On motion of Blake Richards, it was agreed, — That the motion be amended by deleting the words “rising” and “rates” .

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 11; NAYS: 0.

 

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage examine the role of Sports Canada and amateur sports associations in addressing the incidence of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries in amateur and youth athletics and that it report its findings to the House.

 

At 5:26 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
