The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 11:07 a.m. this day, in Room 208, West Block, the Chair, Jason Kenney, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Irwin Cotler, Jason Kenney, Wayne Marston, Ted Menzies, Mario Silva, Kevin Sorenson and Caroline St-Hilaire.

 

Acting Members present: Sylvie Boucher for Ted Menzies.

 

In attendance: Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development: Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Human Rights Watch: Mickey Spiegel, Senior Researcher for China; Carrie Wilson, Administrator. Canadian Labour Congress: Stephen Benedict, National Director, International Department. Canada-Tibet Committee: Luisa Durante, National Coordinator. Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network: Richard Elliott, Deputy Director, Policy Unit.

 
Pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, May 10, 2006 and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee, October 24, 2006, the Subcommittee resumed its study on Human Rights in China.
 

Mickey Spiegel, Stephen Benedict, Luisa Durante and Richard Elliott made statements and, answered questions.

 

At 12:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 12:39 p.m., the Subcommittee proceeded to sit in camera.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the following witnesses: Canadian Council of Chief Executive: Thomas d'Aquino, Chief Executive and President; Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada: Paul Evans, Co-CEO and Chairman of the Executive Committee; Canada China Business Council: Peter Kruyt, Chairman or Sergio Marchi, Senior Business Advisor and University of Ottawa: Prof. Errol Mendes, Faculty of Law be invited to appear in relation to Canada / China Dialogue on Human Rights for the meeting of Tuesday December 12, 2006 .

 

At 12:47 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
