Thursday, May 31, 2007

The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Patrick Brown, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Mike Lake, Yves Lessard, Gary Merasty, Michael Savage, Mario Silva and Lynne Yelich.

Acting Members present: Denise Savoie for Tony Martin, Thierry St-Cyr for France Bonsant and Lui Temelkovski for Ruby Dhalla.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr, Analyst.

Witnesses: Department of Human Resources and Social Development: Rosaline Frith, Director General, Canada Student Loans Program; Luc Leduc, Senior Counsel and Group Head, Legal Services.

Resuming debate on the motion of Michael Savage

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities call upon departmental officials to provide evidence on the Canada Summer Jobs Program, including but not limited to, the status of exact funding, and that those officials be called upon to appear on an emergency basis on or before June 7th, 2007.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That the Committee meets on Tuesday, June 5, to discuss the draft report on Employability in Canada;

That the Committee meets on Thursday, June 7, from 9 to 10 to hear from the Department officials on Michael Savage's motion, and from 10 to noon to discuss the draft report on Employability in Canada;

That the Sub-committee on Agenda and procedure meets on Tuesday to discuss future businesses.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, November 22, 2006, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-284, An Act to amend the Canada Student Financial Assistance Act (Canada access grants).

Debate arose thereon.

At 4:12 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:20 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Michael Savage moved, — That the meeting be adjourned.

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Yves Lessard, Gary Merasty, Michael Savage, Denise Savoie, Mario Silva, Thierry St-Cyr, Lui Temelkovski — 7; NAYS: Patrick Brown, Michael D. Chong, Mike Lake, Lynne Yelich — 4.

At 4:27 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
