The Standing Committee on International Trade met in a televised session at 11:08 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Guy André, Hon. Navdeep Bains, Leon Benoit, Ron Cannan, Serge Cardin, Peter Julian, Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, Pierre Lemieux, John Maloney and Lui Temelkovski.

 

Acting Members present: Joe Preston for Dean Allison and David Tilson for Ted Menzies.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Peter Berg, Analyst; Michael Holden, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Quebec Network on Continental Integration: Nancy Burrows, co-ordinator. Carleton University: Michael Hart, Simon Reisman Professor of Trade Policy, Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. Canadian Labour Congress: Teresa Healy, Senior Researcher. Canadian Trucking Alliance: Ron Lennox, Vice-President, Trade & Security. Quebec Network on Continental Integration: Normand Pépin, Director, Research Services, Central des syndicats démocratiques.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of Canada-U.S. Trade and Investment Issues and the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP).
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:48 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:50 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was moved - That, pursuant to section 108(2) of the Regulations of the House, the Standing Committee recommend that the government quickly begin talks with its American and Mexican counterparts to exclude water from the scope of NAFTA and that adoption of this motion, and preamble, be reported to the House as soon as possible.
