The Standing Committee on Health met at 10:07 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D Centre Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Don Boudria, Bonnie Brown, Réal Ménard and Rob Merrifield.

Acting Members present: John Duncan for Greg Thompson, Christian Jobin for Gilbert Barrette, Jason Kenney for Deborah Grey and Pat Martin for Svend Robinson.

Other Members present: Tom Wappel.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst ; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

Witnesses: Centre for Science in the Public Interest: Bill Jeffery, National Coordinator. Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association: Joyce Reynolds, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs; Jill Holroyd, Vice President, Research and Communications. Food and Consumer Products Manufacturers of Canada: Nancy Croitoru, President and Chief Executive Officer; Fred Schaeffer, Chief Operating Officer, Kraft Canada. McDonald's Restaurants of Canada Ltd.: Richard Ellis, Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs. Cara Operations Ltd.: David Barlow, Chief Operating Officer, Harvey's Restaurant. Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada: Sally Brown, Chief Executive Officer; Carol Dombrow, Nutrition Consultant.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, March 30, 2004, the Committee resumed consideration of the subject-matter of Bill C-398, An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (food labelling); and the subject of trans fatty acids.

Joyce Reynolds, Nancy Croitoru, Richard Ellis, David Barlow, Sally Brown and Bill Jeffery made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 12:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
