MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 6

Wednesday, May 30, 2001

The Sub-Committee on Human Rights and International Development of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:46 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the acting Chair, Colleen Beaumier, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Colleen Beaumier, Eugène Bellemare, Irwin Cotler, Antoine Dubé, Deepak Obhrai.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: James Lee, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the Inter-Church Committee on Human Rights in Latin America: Bill Fairbairn, South America Program Coordinator; Lilia Solano. From the Centre for Research in Latin America and the Caribbean: Emmanuel Rozental-Klinger, Research Fellow. From the Canada-Colombia Solidarity Campaign 2001: Pablo Leal. As Individual: Kimberly Inksater, Consultant.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Sub-Committee resumed its study of human rights, development and other matters in Colombia.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed,--That the Committee proceed to consideration of its future business.

Irwin Cotler moved,--That the Sub-Committee agree to undertake a study of the situation in Sudan and that a meeting on this subject be held on the evening of Wednesday June 6, 2001 and that Senator Lois Wilson, Special Envoy to Sudan, be invited as a witness.

And debate thereon, the question being put on the motion, it was negatived.

The Committee reverted to consideration of its Order of the Day

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 5:51 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
