Tuesday, April 16, 2002
The Standing Committee on Health met in camera at 11:37 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Reg Alcock, Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, Brenda Chamberlain, Stan Dromisky, Rob Merrifield, Hélène Scherrer, Judy Sgro, Bob Speller, Yolande Thibeault, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.
Acting Members present: Bernard Bigras for Réal Ménard, Marcel Gagnon for Diane Bourgeois, John Herron for André Bachand, Howard Hilstrom for Diane Ablonczy
Other Member present: Karen Kraft Sloan
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Sonya Norris and Monique Hébert, Research Officers.
Appearing: From the House of Commons: The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Health.
Witness: From the Pest Management Regulatory Agency: Claire Franklin, Executive Director.
The Committee proceeded to discuss its future business.
It was agreed – That in order to expedite the Committee’s consideration of Bill C-53, extra meetings of the Committee may be held as long as these are scheduled so as not to coincide with regularly scheduled meetings of other Standing Committees.
It was agreed – That the Committee invite the Minister of Health to appear before it to discuss the Main Estimates at a date no later than Thursday, May 9, 2002.
At 12:02 p.m., the meeting was suspended.
At 12:11 p.m., the Committee resumed sitting in a televised public session.
The Order of Reference dated Monday, April 15, 2002 was read as follows:
ORDERED: - That Bill C-53, An Act to Protect Human Health and Safety and the Environment by Regulating Products used for the Control of Pests, be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Health. Accordingly, the Bill was read the second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Health.
The Minister made a statement and, with the witness, answered questions.
At 1:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
