Thursday, April 26, 2001
The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:11 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, John Cummins, John Duncan, Wayne Easter, Gerald Keddy, Dominic LeBlanc, James Lunney, Bill Matthews, Jean-Yves Roy, Guy St-Julien, Paul Steckle, Peter Stoffer.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Yves Bastien, Commissioner for Aquaculture Development; Jack Taylor, Executive Director, Office of the Commissioner for Aquaculture Development.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to the review of the report of the Commissioner for Aquaculture Development on the Legislative and Regulatory Review of Aquaculture in Canada.
The Chairman reported the proceedings of the meeting of the Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure as follows:
That the Sub-Committee had agreed, - That the Committee wait a week before proceeding any further on the issue of hygiene aboard shrimp boats.
That the Sub-Committee had agreed, - That the Committee invite the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to speak to the Estimates on Tuesday, 15 May 2001.
That the Sub-Committee had agreed, - That the Committee invite the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development to appear on the Marshall Decision before the Committee's East Coast trip schedule to start 5 May 2001.
It was agreed, - That the Committee adopt the Chairman's report.
It was agreed, - That the Committee hear witnesses on the problems of the Fraser River - Adams River sockeye salmon at a date to be determined.
Yves Bastien made a statement and, with Jack Taylor, answered questions.
At 10:53 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
