Thursday, November 22, 2001

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 8:19 a.m. this day, in the District of Ucluelet Recreation Hall, Ucluelet, British Columbia, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: John Cummins, Rodger Cuzner, Wayne Easter, Georges Farrah, Loyola Hearn, James Lunney, Peter Stoffer, Suzanne Tremblay, Tom Wappel.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Andy Nelson, Acting Superintendant, Pacific Region Marine Communications and Traffic Services; Larry Pokeda, Officer-in-Charge; Dave Godfrey, Acting Centre Operations Supervisor, Watch Supervisor; Julius Smolders, Watch Supervisor; Terry Wedmedyk, Watch Supervisor. As Individual: Norm Sigmund. From the District of Ucluelet: Dianne St. Jacques, Mayor. From Ucluelet Seafood Processors: Paul Bourke, Director. From Port Fish (Port Alberni): Jock Bray, Chief Executive Officer. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a meeting on Marine Communications and Traffic Services.

At 8:23, the Chair appointed James Lunney Acting Chair.

Julius Smolders, Dave Godfrey, Terry Wedmedyk, Lary Pokeda and Andy Nelson, made statements and answered questions.

At 10:16 a.m., the meeting was suspended.

At 10:30 a.m., the meeting was resumed.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consider problems in the Pacific Hake fishery.

Norm Sigmund, Dianne St. Jacques, Paul Bourke, Jock Bray, Garth Mirau, Lori Foster and Emil Kristianson made statements and answered questions.

At 12:33 p.m., the meeting was suspended.

At 13:00 p.m., the meeting was resumed.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consider problems in the Port Alberni fisheries.

Darren de Luca, Bruce Kramer, Bob Cole and Ed Lochbaum made statements and answered questions.

At 14:21 p.m., the meeting was suspended.

At 14:28 p.m., the meeting was resumed.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consider marine infrastructure (Small Craft Harbours).

Warren Bernard, Ian Howat, Dan Haley and Ken Gibson made statements and answered questions.

At 3:04 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
