Meeting No. 48

Tuesday, September 26, 2000

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met in camera at 9:28 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Karen Kraft Sloan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Marlene Catterall, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, John Herron, Joe Jordan, Karen Kraft Sloan, David Pratt and Julian Reed.

Acting Members present: Rick Limoges for Charles L. Caccia, Gar Knutson for Aileen Carroll, Judy Sgro for Nick Discepola and Karen Redman for Paddy Torsney.

Associate Member present: Clifford Lincoln.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas and Christine Labelle, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Parks Canada Agency: Bruce Amos, Director General, National Parks Directorate; Nikita Lopoukhine, Executive Director, Ecological Integrity Branch, National Parks Directorate; Dr. Gilles Seutin, Senior Biologist, Ecology Integrity Branch, National Parks Directorate.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of issues pertaining to the protection of wildlife species at risk in Canada with respect to Bill C-33, an Act respecting the protection of wildlife species at risk in Canada (See Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, June 15, 2000, Meeting No. 44).

The Committee discussed its future business.

It was agreed, - That in addition to the usual Tuesday morning, Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning sittings, the Committee, with actual meeting times to be chosen at the discretion of the Chair, may sit on October 2, 16 and 23 to consider issues pertaining to the protection of wildlife species at risk in Canada with respect to Bill C-33, an Act respecting the protection of wildlife species at risk in Canada, pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted on June 15, 2000.

At 9:47 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:49 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Bruce Amos made a statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 10:22 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:32 a.m., the sitting resumed.

At 11:40 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
