Meeting No. 87

Tuesday, December 8, 1998

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Hec Clouthier, Gordon Earle, Maurice Godin, Art Hanger, Jim Hart, Judi Longfield, Pat O'Brien, John O'Reilly, David Pratt, David Price, George Proud, John Richardson, Bob Wood.

Acting Member present: Ghislain Lebel for René Laurin.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Grant Purves, Researchers.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Gen Maurice Baril, Chief of the Defence Staff; Col Christine Preece. From Reserves 2000: LCol Peter W. Hunter (Retired), Co-Chair; BGen Peter A.G. Cameron (Retired); LCol John A. Selkirk (Retired);.Gen Ernest B. Beno.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of a Review of the Social and Economic Challenges Facing Members of the Canadian Forces.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to the consideration of the Future of the Reserves.

Gen Maurice Baril made an opening statement and, with the witness, answered questions.

Gordon Earle moved, - That the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs supports the reinstatement of the Halifax Rifles, and recommends that the federal government bring the reinstatement into effect by the end of the 1998-1999 fiscal year.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was negatived by a show of hands.

BGen Peter A.G. Cameron, LCol Peter W. Hunter and LCol John A. Selkirk made opening statements and, with the witness, answered questions.

At 5:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
