The Standing Committee on Standing Committee on Human Resources and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 9:15 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 705, La Promenade Building, the Acting Chair, Dale Johnston, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Rob Anders, Carolyn Bennet, Claudette Bradshaw, Brenda Chamberlain, Albina Guarnieri, Dale Johnston and Bryon Wilfert.
Acting Members present: At 9:10 a.m. Ian Murray for Reg Alcock, at 9:19 a.m. John O'Reilly for Ian Murray, Carmen Provenzano for Bob Nault, Jenko Peric for Bonnie Brown,Yves Rocheleau for Paul Crête, Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral for Patrick de Savoye, Jim Gouk for Diane Ablonczy.
Other Members present: Bob Kilger and Bernard Patry.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Sandra Harder, Research Officer.
Appearing: The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Labour.
Witnesses: From the Department of Human Resources Development: Mel Cappe Deputy Minister; Gerry J. Blanchard, Director General; Debra Robinson, Director, Legislative Review – Part I of the Canada Labour Code; Martha Nixon, Associate Executive Head; John Knubley, Director General, Social Policy; Brian Chapman, Director, Employability and Social Partnerships.
Pursuant to its Order of Reference the Committee resumed a series of briefings on the department assigned to it. Today's session being on a) Labour Policy and b) Human Resources intradepartmental activities in the area of disability. (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, October 28, 1997, Meeting No. 4).
The Minister made a statement and, with other the witnesses, answered questions.
At 10:23 o'clock a.m., the Committee was suspended.
At 11:05 o'clock a.m., the Committee resumed.
Martha Nixon and John Knubley of Human Resources Development made a statement and with the other witnesses, answered questions.
At 11:41 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
