MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No. 63)

THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 1998

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met in televised session at 11:18 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Charles Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Charles Caccia, Aileen Carroll, Rick Casson, Yvon Charbonneau, Bill Gilmour, John Herron, Joe Jordan, Gar Knutson, Karen Kraft Sloan, Rick Laliberté, David Pratt.

Acting Members present: Gordon Earle for Rick Laliberté.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Monique Hébert, Christine Labelle, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Dene community of Deline: Cindy Kenny Gilday, Chair, Deline Uranium Committee; Paul Baton, Community Delegate; Gina Bayha, Community Delegate; Joe Blondin Jr., Community Delegate; Murray Klippenstein, Adviser.

The Committee discussed its future business.

It was agreed, -- That, the Committee hold meetings in the fall to consider the question of establishing a Biological / Biodiversity Information System.

It was agreed, -- That, the Chair would prepare a program of Bill C-32 hearings to take place in September, before the House resumes sitting.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced consideration of the issue of uranium contamination in the Great Bear Lake region of the Northwest Territories and its effects on the health of the residents, particularly the Dene community of Deline.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

Ordered, -- That, the Clerk ensure that a video copy of this day's proceedings being video-recorded for telecasting on CPAC, be sent to the witnesses.

At 1:12 o'clock p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

At 1:13 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
