Meeting No. 12


TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 1998

The Standing Committee on Transport met at 3:30 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 269 West Block, the Chair, Ray Bonin, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Roy Bailey, Ray Bonin, Murray Calder, John Cannis, Bill Casey, Roy Cullen, Bev Desjarlais, Claude Drouin, Joe Fontana, Michel Guimond, Stan Keyes, Paul Mercier, Lee Morrison and Carolyn Parrish.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: John Christopher, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Department of Transport: André Pageot, Director General, Marine Policy and Programs; Jerry Rysanek, Chief, Policy Development, Insurance and Liability; Alfred Popp, Senior General Counsel, Maritime Law Secretariat.

The Order of Reference from the House of Commons dated February 23, 1998 being read as follows:

ORDERED, - That Bill S-4, An Act to amend the Canada Shipping Act (maritime liability) be referred to the Standing Committee on Transport.

André Pageot introduced his colleagues and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

By unanimous consent, the Committee adopted Clauses 2 to 31 inclusive.

The Schedule carried.

Clause 1 carried.

The Title carried.

The Bill carried.

ORDERED, - That the Chairman report Bill S-4, without amendment.

At 4:05 o'clock p.m., the Committee began to sit in camera to discuss its future business.


At 4:10 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
