Adjournment Motion Proposed Under Standing Order 26 / Application Not Accepted

Application premature

Debates p. 3673-4

Background

Mr. Stanfield (Leader of the Opposition) sought leave to move the adjournment of the House, under the provisions of Standing Order 26, in order to discuss "the postal slowdown in Montreal, which has crippled mail service".

Issue

Does the application meet the requirements of Standing Order 26?

Decision

No. The application is not accepted.

Reasons given by the Speaker

Although this is a matter of urgent importance and national interest the motion should not be accepted at this stage because the parties to the conflict intend to hold important consultations and it would be wiser to wait until the results of these meetings are known. Debate now would be premature, but the Member has the right to make his motion tomorrow or at a later date.
