Adjournment Motion Proposed under Standing Order 30

Introduction

The purpose of the emergency adjournment motion is to allow a debate on a specific and important issue outside the schedule of House business, usually at 8:00 p.m. The Speaker decides, based on the Member's presentation, whether such a debate should take place. In accepting or rejecting the application, the Speaker is not bound to state any reasons. In reaching a decision, the Chair takes principally into account the urgency of the debate, rather than the urgency of the issue, and other criteria, including the administrative responsibility of the Government and the scope of ministerial action.
