Context

On April 27, 1987, the Hon. Edward Broadbent (Oshawa) rose pursuant to Standing Order 29 to ask for leave to move the adjournment of the House for the purpose of discussing the announcement by Dome Petroleum that it intended to accept a corporate takeover by the Amoco Corporation.[1] The Speaker ruled on the application immediately.

Decision of the Chair

Mr. Speaker: The Chair has had time to consider the matter of this application, and it would seem that the application is in order. The Chair is prepared to put the question to the House.

Does the honourable Member have leave to move the adjournment of the House under Standing Order 29 for the purpose of discussing a specific and important matter?

Some honourable Members: Agreed.

Mr. Speaker: The debate will commence at eight o'clock p.m. this day.

Postscript

Following amendments to the Standing Orders adopted in June 1987, the leave of the House was no longer required in order for an emergency debate to take place.
