The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 9:23 o'clock a.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chairman, Eleni Bakopanos, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Eleni Bakopanos, Mary Clancy, Bernie Collins, Stan Dromisky, Val Meredith and Anna Terrana.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada: Georges Tsaï, Assistant Deputy Minister, Partnerships; Agnès Jaouich, Director General, Integration; David Neuman, National Director, Settlement Renewal.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of a study on Settlement Renewal (See Minutes of Proceedings, dated Tuesday, June 6, 1995, Issue No. 48).

Georges Tsaï, David Neuman and Agnès Jaouich each made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:40 o'clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.


THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1995

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 9:35 o'clock a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Eleni Bakopanos, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Eleni Bakopanos, Mary Clancy, Bernie Collins, Maud Debien, Stan Dromisky, Val Meredith, Osvaldo Nunez and Anna Terrana.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Jewish Immigrant Aid Services (J.I.A.S.): Joel Mass, Executive Director. From the ``Centre Multi-Ethnique de Notre-Dame-de-Grâce'': Nadine Lemaître. From the ``Bureau de la communauté chrétienne des Haïtiens de Montréal'': Eric Faustin, Director. From the ``Accueil liaison pour arrivants (A.L.P.A.)'': Gliceria Acosta, Director. From the South Asian Women's Community Centre: Jennifer Chew.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on Settlement Renewal (See Minutes of Proceedings, dated Tuesday, June 6, 1995, Issue No. 48).

Joel Mass, from the Jewish Immigrant Aid Services, Jennifer Chew, from the South Asian Women's Community Centre, Eric Faustin, from the ``Bureau de la communauté chrétienne des haïtiens de Montréal'', Nadine Lemaître, from the ``Centre Multi-Ethnique de Notre-Dame-de-Grâce'' and Gliceria Acosta from the ``Accueil liaison pour arrivants'' each made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:52 o'clock a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

The Committee proceeded to discuss future business.

At 11:01 o'clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:39 o'clock p.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, Eleni Bakopanos, presiding.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on Settlement Renewal (See Minutes of Proceedings, dated Tuesday, June 6, 1995, Issue No. 48).

Ann Vanstone presented a short videotape, made a statement and, with the other witnesses from the Federation of Public School Boards of Metropolitan Toronto, answered questions.

Harvey Weiner, John Cheng, Damian Solomon and Sandra Bourque each made a statement and, with the other witnesses from the Canadian School Boards Association, answered questions.

Leo Lynch from the Metropolitan Separate School Board made a statement and answered questions.

Nandita Sharma from the National Action Committee on the Status of Women made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:38 o'clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

After debate, it was agreed,--That the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration hold hearings on the draft agreement initialled by the governments of the United States and Canada regarding asylum seekers.

At 9:30 o'clock a.m., the sitting was suspended until 11:00 o'clock a.m.

At 11:12 o'clock a.m., the sitting resumed.

After debate, it was agreed,--That the Committee do adjourn until next Tuesday.

At 11:16 o'clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
