Petition to the House of Commons

Whereas:
  • Canada’s mental health crisis is one of the most pressing healthcare issues of the twenty-first century;
  • Based on data from 2022, more than 5 million Canadians aged 15 and older met the diagnostic criteria for a mood, anxiety, or substance use disorder in the previous year;
  • More than 1 in 3 Canadians who met the diagnostic criteria for a mood, anxiety, or substance use disorder in the past year reported their needs for mental health care services were not met or only partially met;
  • The prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders has increased significantly since 2012; and
  • The lack of a national framework for mental health care has left Canada ill-equipped to provide the necessary support to Canadians in an equitable way.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
1. Collaborate with provinces and territories to develop a universal mental healthcare system to ensure all Canadians receive accessible and adequate support for their mental health concerns;
2. Ensure insured services under a universal mental health care plan includes effective modalities with proven success rates, like free psychotherapy, free psychological assessments, long-term support, and services tailored to the diverse needs of Canadians;
3. Commit adequate federal funding to facilitate the successful implementation of a universal mental healthcare system across Canada; and
4. Collaborate with provinces and territories to update and harmonize legislation and guidelines regarding mental health services, professionals, and patient rights.
