Petition to the House of Commons

Whereas:
  • Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina labeled peaceful quota reform protesters as 'Razakars', sparking outrage and unnecessarily escalated the movement;
  • Pro-Awami League extremists and police violently attacked protesters, killing hundreds of civilians;
  • Bangladeshi students demanded accountability for the killings and prosecution of those responsible;
  • Sheikh Hasina's cabinet deployed forces to dominate protesters, shut down the internet, and continued killing protesters and civilians;
  • The official death toll is nearly 200, with higher unofficial reports; and
  • The government of Bangladesh controls the narrative through propaganda and false information in all Bangladeshi media outlets, suppressing dissenting voices and reports of atrocities.
We, the undersigned, informed Bangladeshi diaspora in Canada, call upon the House of Commons to:
1. Condemn the violent suppression of peaceful protests and civilians in Bangladesh and the excessive force used by the government;
2. Call for an immediate end to the crackdown on dissenting voices and the restoration of democracy;
3. Demand immediate accountability for the extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses committed by the Bangladeshi government and its affiliates;
4. Support an independent investigation into the atrocities and hold those responsible accountable;
5. Request democratic allies to take a stand against such brutality and protect the students and civilians of Bangladesh;
6. Consider imposing sanctions on individuals responsible for human rights abuses in Bangladesh; and
7. Promise support and protection to Bangladeshi citizens and their families around the world against the violent regime.
