Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Community safety is essential for the well-being and quality of life of Canadians;
  • Security infrastructure deters crime and aids law enforcement;
  • Financial constraints hinder small businesses and homeowners from improving security, leaving them vulnerable;
  • Law enforcement faces delays in accessing surveillance footage from publicly funded properties, hindering crime prevention and resolution;
  • Crime prevention programs addressing root causes of criminal behaviour are underfunded; and
  • Law enforcement requires enhanced financial support to effectively address safety challenges and expand operational capacities.
We, the undersigned, concerned residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
1. Establish a federal community safety infrastructure fund to support private homeowners and small business owners in installing and upgrading security equipment;
2. Ensure the accessibility and affordability of security enhancements for all homeowners and small businesses;
3. Collaborate with provincial and municipal governments to streamline application processes and raise awareness about the availability of such funding, ensuring maximum participation and impact;
4. Support police investigations by streamlining access to surveillance footage from publicly funded properties, to improve law enforcement efficiency in deterring and resolving criminal activity, while respecting individuals’ constitutional right to privacy;
5. Introduce and expand federal funding for community crime prevention programs, especially for young persons; and
6. Provide more direct funding to strengthen law enforcement.
