Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled
- The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (hereinafter “Rome Statute”) was ratified by Canada in 2002;
- The Rome Statute provides for the prosecution in the International Criminal Court of serious violations of the law of nations, including crimes against humanity and war crimes;
- The ratification of the Rome Statute ensures that domestic political or other considerations of any given party to the Rome Statute do not prevent the prosecution of violations of the law of nations;
- The oversight of the International Criminal Court is increasingly important in a world where a state-sanctioned kidnapping is an “extraordinary rendition,” state-sanctioned torture is an “enhanced interrogation technique,” and a state-sanctioned secret kill list is a “Disposition Matrix”; and
- Canada should refrain from rendering military aid or intelligence to any nations which refuse to allow their citizens or residents to be prosecuted in the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity, or other violations of the law of nations, as it cannot be assured that such assistance will not aid, directly or indirectly, in violations of the law of nations which may not be punished.
