- Tunisia was a beacon of hope for the Arab-Muslim world after the 2011 revolution when it established a democracy;
- Since July 25, 2021, President Kais Saied began his power grab by suspending parliament and dissolving all independent democratic institutions;
- The actions of President Kais Saied undermined the fledgling democracy, human rights protections, freedom of speech and judicial independence;
- Key political figures, parliamentarians and journalists were imprisoned for taking a stand against the president’s power grab;
- Civilians were tried before military courts and at least 12 of them were sentenced for having exercised their right to free speech;
- Canada has a responsibility to defend human rights and to promote democratic values at the international level;
- Tunisia has made significant progress in recent years and Canada can support Tunisians in their efforts to maintain their hard-won gains in the areas of human rights and democracy.
