Petition to the Government of Canada
- Since December 2019, Algerian citizens, specifically Kabyle people, have been subjected to repression and arbitrary arrests for publicly expressing their political opinions;
- To date, human rights organizations count no fewer than five hundred people unjustly imprisoned in Algeria on the basis of false allegations and memberships in a terrorist organization ever since the Movement for Self Determination of Kabylie, although pacifistic, was wrongly classified as such by the current Algerian government;
- Among these prisoners of conscience is Kamira Nait Sid, co-president of the World Amazigh Congress, an international NGO, who was a key speaker at a conference in 2016 with the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste and who visited the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa;
- These arbitrary arrests violate international human rights law; and
- Militias belonging to the Algerian secret police, called DRS, as well as security officers in the Algerian army, even dared to terrorize Kabyle villagers, including children and seniors, in the middle of the night.
