Petition to the Government of Canada
- In 2021, the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability identified 173 homicides of women and girls, of which 50% were attributed to family violence;
- According to the 2019 Statistics Canada report on family violence, 30% of police-reported violent crimes were cases of intimate partner violence, and 79% of victims were female;
- In September 2019, the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime released a statement calling for vital changes to the criminal justice system to address family violence and for all levels of government to take action to put an end to violence against women; and
- The action taken by the Government of Canada appears to be inadequate, given that violence against women is on the rise, as is the number of homicides that result.
