Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • In 2021, the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability identified 173 homicides of women and girls, of which 50% were attributed to family violence;
  • According to the 2019 Statistics Canada report on family violence, 30% of police-reported violent crimes were cases of intimate partner violence, and 79% of victims were female;
  • In September 2019, the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime released a statement calling for vital changes to the criminal justice system to address family violence and for all levels of government to take action to put an end to violence against women; and
  • The action taken by the Government of Canada appears to be inadequate, given that violence against women is on the rise, as is the number of homicides that result.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
1. Support and uphold Bill S-205, which amends the Criminal Code to address the issues identified above, particularly as regards judicial interim release conditions (s. 515) and sureties to keep the peace (s. 810) in the Criminal Code; and
2. Take action to guarantee the physical safety of victims and on ways to raise awareness of family violence and prevent it, ensuring that the principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms are applied, regardless of political affiliation.
