Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Cigarette butts are the most common category of small litter in Canada;
  • Cigarette butts are more harmful to the environment than other small litter because they are made up of hundreds of toxic chemicals;
  • Many Canadians have looked into this problem and have attempted to ban cigarette butts as a single-use plastic, but the ban was turned down because there are no viable alternatives to plastic cigarette filters; and
  • Finding a viable alternative to plastic cigarette filters would therefore reduce the amount of toxic chemicals that leach into the ground from cigarette litter.
We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to apply a nationwide fee of $1 per pack of cigarettes to be used as funding for further research into finding a viable alternative to plastic cigarette filters.
