e-1514 (Employment)

Petition to the Government of Canada
- It is time to update the Employment Equity Act to include upgraded affirmative action plans that include personal advocates or sponsors, and deterrence of behaviour contrary to the spirit of our Constitution, which has as one of its fundamental values, the achievement of equality;
- The current employment equity reports show marginal progress and paints a bleak picture of the progress of transformation in the Canadian workplace;
- The continued high rate at which the majority appears to be afforded preferential treatment for recruitment, promotion and training opportunities at top management level is of concern;
- This trend renders it highly unlikely to achieve equitable representation at this level in the near future;
- The slow pace of change is due to this government’s outdated objectives and the neglect of real skills development;
- Aboriginal women are not only missing from their homes but from our workplaces and continue to be the most underrepresented;
- There are companies where official performance appraisals differ substantially from what is said informally; and
- Executives are only sponsoring people like themselves.
