Petition to the Government of Canada
We, the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada, draw the attention of the House of Commons to the following:
Whereas:
- The seniors of Battle River-Crowfoot are concerned about our changing climate. The burning of fossil fuels is causing increasingly intense floods, heatwaves, droughts, fires and hurricanes. According to the scientists of the IPCC (AR-6 Report, Mar 2023), "climate change is a threat to human well- being and the health of the planet. Any further delay in concerted global action will miss the brief, rapidly closing window to secure a livable future.";
- Immediate action is necessary and the evidence suggests that we have the ability to create a better world;
- According to the International Energy Agency in 2022, about 5 million jobs in fossil fuel production could be lost by 2030, but 14 million new jobs would be created in clean energy, resulting in a net gain of 9 million jobs. Burning fossil fuels comes with a high cost. The World Health Organization found that in 2018, air pollution from fossil fuels caused $2.9 trillion in health and economic costs. In 2021, Health Canada estimated that air pollution costs us $120 billion and contributes to 15,300 deaths in Canada per year; and
- Taking strong action to transition to renewable energy will create a better economy, better health and a more peaceful and stable world.
Therefore: We, the undersigned electors of Battle River-Crowfoot, call upon the Government of Canada, for the love of our children and grandchildren, to act faster to reduce Canada's GHG emissions and to transition to renewable energy.
- Presented to the House of Commons
