PETITION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED

We, the undersigned residents of Canada, draw the attention of the House of Commons to the following:

Whereas:

Expanding Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) to those with a mental illness is wrong, and would recklessly put some of the most vulnerable Canadians at risk;

It is impossible to determine whether or not a mental illness is irremediable, meaning that expanding MAID to those with a mental illness would lead to the deaths of people who could have otherwise gotten better;

It is impossible for clinicians to distinguish a rational MAID request from one motivated by suicidality; and

The Liberal government has failed to meet their election promises to expand mental health supports for Canadians, who could become eligible for MAID because of their mental illness.

Therefore, we the undersigned, call upon the House of Commons to stand with vulnerable persons and permanently scrap the reckless expansion of MAID to those with a mental illness as the sole underlying medical condition.
