Petition to the Government of Canada

We, the undersigned Citizens of Canada, draw the attention of the House of Commons to the following:

WHEREAS:

2024 marks the 40 year anniversary of the 1984 Sikh Genocide, during which thousands of innocent Sikh men, women and children were brutally attacked and murdered across India;

Indian state actors utilized government resources as part of a premeditated plan to identify their victims;

The Government of India's own Nanavati Commission Report acknowledges the killings were systematic and organized and Indian courts have observed genocide has been duly proved and established; and

Acknowledging this genocide is the first important step towards community healing - and addressing intergenerational trauma.

Therefore, your petitioners call on the Government of Canada, to formally recognize this state-organized killing spree as genocide; and as per the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, affirm its belief that the Indian government must take all reasonable measures to bring those responsible for this organized campaign of violence to justice, including criminal prosecution.
