Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • A large portion of Canada's economy is driven by rail deliveries;
  • The freight lines between Belleville and Bowmanville act as a natural weak point or bottleneck; and
  • The future economic security of Canada is paramount.
We, the undersigned, People of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to invest in the construction and maintenance of new rail on the Renfrew/Chalk River/North Bay subdivisions that would have a maintained run from Ottawa to Sudbury. This would provide redundancy and security for our critical freight movements in the event that the main tracks are ever blocked due to a major incident that closes the mainline infrastructure. This could be done for a comparatively small investment of capital and annual maintenance, and reduces the likelihood of economic disruption. If even one incident occurs, the savings of having this line would pay for itself almost immediately.
